First Impressions: Spring 2019 Anime

The beginning episodes of the Spring 2019 anime season have concluded and I've been able to see all the shows I've wanted to see except for one. However, that won't keep it out of my ratings. Given the large amounts of shorts this season that I am watching, I will include them in the list. The following is my list of power rankings based on what series I enjoy the most.

1. Kimetsu no Yaiba (Blade of Demon)

  • Blade of Demon easily takes the top spot. The historic demon anime follows Tanjirou Kamado a boy well known by locals for being very helpful. After a demon epidemic breaks out a demon hunter roams the night to slay demons. Tanjirou's family is murdered and his surviving sister is turned into a demon. The catch is she isn't a normal demon as she retains some of her human intuition. In the first episode, Tanjirou and his demon sister encounter the demon slayer. Also, did I mention, that there is good CG?

2. Isekai Quartet

  • Isekai Quartet is definitely worth the watch, but I can't recommend it to everyone. Being the ultimate isekai to ever isekai, Isekai Quartet features characters from the show KonoSuba, Re:Zero, Overlord, and Youjo Senki. The characters from their respected shows make references to events, plots, or dialogue from their original shows, making it hard to follow if not seen prior. This is why I can't recommend it to everyone. The bright side is each of their original shows are all fairly good and are worth the watch.

3. Carole and Tuesday

  • Admittedly, this is the one show I haven't watched yet. However, from what I have seen from the anime community, and the people I have talked to about the first episode, I haven't heard anything wrong with it. It seems as this show will be a contender for anime of the season. The first episode references the song Colours" by Cindy Lauper. It will be interesting to see if future episodes reference other songs.

4. Fruits Basket

  • Fruits Basket or as the community has made a meme, Fruits Basket: Brotherhood is the reboot of the original series in 2001. The Brotherhood meme comes in because it's been said that this 2019 reboot will follow the manga closer than the original; similar treatment as Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Prior knowledge of the series isn't needed and I can definitely recommend picking this one up.

5. Sewayaki Kitsune no Senko-san (Meddlesome Kitsune Senko-san)

  • Rounding out the top five is Meddlesome Kitsune Senko-san. Don't let the title fool you, Senko, a Kitsune, is meddlesome in the sense she intrudes on our protagonist Nakano, but she is a cute, helpful, warm-hearted 800-year-old fox girl. If you have seen Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, the first episode feels very similar. Senko is similar to Tooru and the only glaring difference is that she is a fox, not a dragon.

6. One Punch Man II

  • One Punch Man II is back for another season, but it's done by a different studio. Madhouse, the studio for season one, is no longer in control of the series and has handed it off to J.C. Staff. The first episode isn't a train wreck as people thought it would be. While the animation quality has dropped, the first episode was still pretty good.

7. Nande Koko ni Sensei ga!? (Why the Hell are you Here, Teacher?)

  • Why the Hell are you Here, Teacher? is of Spring 2019's ecchi comedy. Arguably, the series itself deserves this rank based on the story, but the censorship ruins the anime. Being a very ecchi series constant censor bubbles appear on the screen that takes away from the strength of the story. However, if you can look past that, the characters and story make it worth the watch.

8. Chou Kadou Girl 1/6: Amazing Stranger (Chou Kadou Girl 1/6)

  • We all have our wifu and husbando and we all have wondered what it would be like if they were real. Chou Kadou Girl 1/6: Amazing Stranger shows us what it would be like for our wifu figurine to become real. The series in itself isn't great, but the gimmick itself puts it this high up on the list.

9. Shoumetsu Toshi (Annihilation City)

  • Madhouse's newest series Annihilation City is an action-adventure series featuring Takuya, a keep to himself contractor. In the present day of the show, Lost, a city has disappeared along with all the people except for Yuki, a girl from Lost. A cryptic message from Yuki's father leads her to believe that he still alive and waiting for her at Lost. Takuya agrees to take Yuki to Lost, but there are obstacles in their way.

10. Fairy Gone

  • Fairy Gone is an anime which isn't necessarily bad, but I found hard to get into. The premise is a fantasy magic world with fairy spirits controlled by humans implanted into animals to create soldiers. Now that the war is finished these "soldiers" have dispersed throughout government, mafia, and terrorists. An organization called Dorothea wants to rid of these criminals using their own fairy soldiers. With this being the only premise of the show I don't see how P.A. Works will expand this to 24 episodes. Potentially an anime that I will drop this season, but the opening theme will be added to my playlist.

11. Hitoribocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu (Hitori Bocchi's Lifestyle)

  • I didn't know what to expect with Hitori Bocchi's Lifestyle and after the first episode, I still don't know what to expect. Hitori Bocchi, our protagonist with a name that means alone, is a middle school girl with extreme anxiety about talking to people. She made a promise to her childhood friend to make friends and this is the story of her doing so. If each episode is an interaction with a different classmate this anime will surely move up the list.

12. Midara na Ao-chan wa Benkyou ga Dekinai (Ao-chan Can't Study)

  • Ao-chan Can't Study is Spring 2019's other comedy. The series follows Ao Horie whose name comes from Apple and Orgy, named by her father, an erotic author. The show feels like it will be the trashy anime that is still enjoyable. Ao-chan is confessed to by "King Normie" a classmate named Kajima. She rejects him and her continued interactions with him are misinterpreted due to her father's influence.

13. Bokutachi wa Benkyou ga Dekinai (We never learn)

  • Kicking off the bottom five is We Never Learn. A harem anime about Nariyuki Yuiga, a high school student who wants to receive a special VIP nomination to get into the university of his choice. To do so, he must tutor different girls in at school. The first episode starts off with two girls who need help with their studying. As future episodes occur more girls will be added to their study sessions.

14. Nobunaga-sensei no Osanazuma (Mr. Nobunaga's Young Bride)

  • Not much to say about this one, sexual 14-year-old loli, Kichou Saitou, travels through time to marry and have children with middle school teacher, Nobunaga Oda because he shares the same name as someone from the Sengoku era. If this anime wasn't seven minutes per episode I would drop it. Since it's short I'll see if it goes anywhere. At least the soundtrack is good.

15. Araiya-san!: Ore to Aitsu ga Onnayu de!? (Miss Washer!: Her and I in a Female Bath!?)

  • Speaking of short anime, Miss Washer!: Her and I in a Female Bath!? is a three-minute anime about Mitsutaka Noshitani who takes over his father's bathhouse where he washes, more like harasses, his clients. The anime is classified as a romance, but the only reason to watch this is for the uncensored ecchi.

16. Joshikausei

  • A silent anime, Joshikausei is an anime short with no dialogue. It's not for everyone, but if you want to try something scarce consider watching this. The first episode didn't get a reaction out of me, but I will continue to see where it goes. I haven't watched a silent anime since Honobono Log.

17. Kenja no Mago (Philosopher's Grandson)

  • Rounding out the bottom five and my least favourite anime so far is Philosopher's Grandson. A generic isekai anime with an overpowered main character that lacks common sense. Nothing from the first episode stood out to me and I'll probably give it three episodes.
