Review: Winter 2019 Anime

The Winter 2019 season for anime is concluding soon. Watching around 10 different series from the season there was a lot of good anime and a lot of bad anime. However, I felt that there was a lack of mediocre anime from this season. The anime I watched was either close to the top spots or could of been skipped. Unable to watch every show airing in a season, hence why Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari (The Rising of the Shield Hero) is not on my list, I have limited this list to the shows I completed and dropped. The full list can be found in my previous articles linked below.

Awards

Best Opening Theme: "Kawaki wo Ameku" - Minami (Domestic na Kanojo)

Best Ending Theme: Special Dance Ending - Chika Fujiwara (Kaguya-sama: Love is War)

Ikkitousen: Western Wolves - Ending theme (Wasn't able to find the song)

  • My favourites from this season is a tie between an OVA and a special ending so I am including them both since these endings only appear for a total of four times.

Waifu of the Season: Kaguyua (Kaguya-sama: Love is War)

Best Fall 2018 Anime: Yakusoku no Neverland (The Promised Neverland)

Top 3

1. Yakusoku no Neverland

The Promised Neverland is a twelve episode series brought to us by CloverWorks studio. The anime follows the Grace Field House, an orphanage in the middle of nowhere housing orphan kids of a variety of ages. The kids are raised by "Mama"a caretaker for the orphanage. The orphanage is fenced off at the forrest and the kids are taught not to venture out past it. At some point every kid has to leave the orphanage when they are picked. The story follows Norman, Emma, and Ray as they find out what happens when a kid is picked and has to leave the orphanage.

2. Domestic na Kanojo

Domestic Girlfriend is the runner up for Winter 2019. The anime is brought to us by Diomedea studio. I was sceptical to watch this series due to this being the same studio that brought us Beatless, a monstrosity of an anime in my personal opinion. Domestic na Kanojo follows Natsuo Fuji who lives a normal life that is about to get more complicated. Natsuo is a single boy in high school and has a crush on his teacher, Hina. At a mixer party Natsuo meets Rui and ends up sleeping with her after the party just for fun. When his father remarries it turns out Hina, his teacher, and Rui, the girl he had a one night stand with, are his new step sisters.

3. Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai: Tensai-tachi no Renai Zunousen

Ever wonder what would happen when two tsunderes fall in love with each other? A-1 Pictures brings us Kaguya-sama: Love is War to answer the question. Kaguya Shinomiya and Miyuki Shirogane are both in love with each other, but neither want to be the first to admit it. Instead, they embark on a back and forth chess game to try and get the other to confess first. Kaguya, the student council vice president uses her wealthy background while Miyuki, the student council president, uses his sharp intellect. Chika Fujiwara, the third member of the student council, is completely oblivious to the fact that the two like each other and is always interfering in each others attempts.

Honourable Mentions

Best Opening Theme: Boogiepop wa Warawanai (2019)

Shadowgraph by Myth & Roid is the opening for Boogiepop Never Laughs. This opening was definitely one of the best ones of the season, as expected from Myth & Roid. If you are unfamiliar with the band they are known for music in Re:Zero, Overlord, and Youjo Senki.

Most Unexpected: Mahou Shoujo Tokushusen Asuka

I typically make a habit of watching the token magical girl (Mahou Shoujo) anime that comes out in a season. This season was Magical Girl Spec Ops Asuka. I was very impressed with this series and as someone who doesn't enjoy military anime with the exception of Attack On Titan, found myself getting into the show each week. The show follows Asuka Ootorii, a retired magical girl after part of her squad was wiped out. When Disas invades and the world goes into chaos Asuka teams up with the remaining five magical girls and forms the special ops and attempt to save humanity.

Note: I plan on making Most Unexpected an award starting in Spring 2019.

Most Disappointing: Pastel Memories

Pastel Memories is an anime that I thought could of been great. While I got what I asked in future episodes after writing my first impressions article, the show didn't quite meet what I expected. If the show had made satire for more popular series or used more well known characters from shows I think this would of been a hit. Also, I'm not sure why the ending theme is relatively lewd compared to the show.
