Spring 2019 - Mid Season Update

Halfway through the Spring 2019 season and my opinions of series have had major changes. Shows have jumped to the top as well as others falling completely off my list. Here are the updates to the series I'm watching.

Anime Fruits Basket
(Fruits Basket 2019, TMS Entertainment, Poster)

Improvements

1. Carole and Tuesday

  • I finally got around to watching Carole and Tuesday. Easily my favourite anime that I've started watching this season. A beautiful soundtrack for an anime about music to showcase the incredible relationship between the characters moves Carole and Tuesday into the top spot. In the show, Carole and Tuesday share an Instagram account where they post photos projecting their career which is also a real Instagram account that can be followed: HERE.

2. Sewayaki Kitsune no Senko-san (Meddlesome Kitsune Senko-san)

  • Senko has made herself a contender for wifu of the season. Being an 800-year-old loli kitsune she checks all the boxes for what normally would be a lewd character. However, Senko is anything but that. With a similar feel to Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, Meddlesome Kitsune Senko-san is a wholesome anime about a fox girl helping a business man anyway she can.

3. Kenja no Mago (Wise Man's Grandchild)

  • The biggest jump this season is Wise Man's Grandchild. Originally, after the first episode I had this anime at the bottom of my list. I stand by this as the first episode really didn't show anything that would make this show worth the watch. The proceeding episodes are what turned the series around for me. In just two episodes the high school isekai managed to captivate my interest. The show does this by giving the unrealistic characters, realistic personalities that match the flow of the series.

Note: Shingeki no Kyojin III-II (Attack on Titan Season 3 Part 2) has started airing and the opening three episodes have been very good.

Deterioration

1. Shoumetsu Toshi (Annihilation City)

  • Opposite to Kenja no Mago, Shoumetsu Toshi starts off with a strong first episode, but cannot keep the same feel in the proceeding episodes. I had high hopes for the series with its interesting concept and being a "Madhouse" series, but ultimately I have ended up dropping the series with a rating of 5/10. The show is fast paced which is meant to keep it from being boring, but adds to confusion since there isn't much buildup of the plot. Because of this the opening episodes still manage to be boring.

2. Fairy Gone

  • The modern-era post war show Fairy Gone admittedly isn't a terrible show. I somewhat enjoyed the first episode, but I can't imagine how P.A. Works plans to keep the series entertaining for 24 episodes. Simply put, the show just isn't my genre of interest. I've dropped the show after three episodes with a score of 5/10. Fairy Gone has also been confirmed for a second season according to myanimelist.net.

3. Nobunaga-sensei no Osanazuma (Mr. Nobunaga's Young Bride)

  • Not much to say about this short. There are some funny moments in the series, but it's nothing more than a weekly fan service show with loli girls and a main character, Nobunaga, that represents the person watching. The show tries to give a mystery element with why these historic girls keep appearing, but the real purpose is just to fill Nobunaga's harem.

Power Rankings

1. Carole and Tuesday

2. Sewayaki Kitsune no Senko-san

3. Isekai Quartet

4. Shingeki no Kyojin

5. Fruits Basket

8. Kenja no Mago

9. Choukadou Girl 1/6

10. Hitoribocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu

11. Joshikausei

12. Midara na Ao-chan wa Benkyou ga Dekinai

13. Bokutachi wa Benkyou ga Dekinai

14. Araiya-san!: Ore to Aitsu ga Onnayu de!?

15. Nobunaga-sensei no Osanazuma

Recommendation

1. Sewayaki Kitsune no Senko-san

While Carole and Tuesday is my current favourite airing anime I want to save it for the end of the season to talk about because by then it will be half way through. During this time I will take the time to talk about Meddling fox Senko-san.

Don't lewd the fox loli is the theme of this show despite Senko being 800-years-old. Senko comes to the human world to take care of our main character, a hardworking salary man. The purpose of Senko's character is to be the perfect half for the diligent man, doing things that he doesn't have time to do such as cleaning his apartment and eating full meals. While Senko doesn't quite understand how human appliances work she uses her kitsune powers to get the job done each episode. The anime is cute and I never thought I would want to see less story in an anime. I just want to watch the two interact with each other on a daily basis.
