Anime: Fall 2018 Review

Fall 2018 season for anime has been anything but a disappointment. With great new shows, amazing sequels, and unexpected story lines here is my review for the top anime of the season.

Unable to watch every show airing in a season, I have limited this list to the shows I completed and dropped. The full list can be found in my previous articles linked below.

Disclaimer: Whether the show started or continued into the fall season, I will be counting it. In this case, Black Clover and Banana Fish will be included.

Top 3

3. Black Clover

Black Clover aired all throughout 2018 and if you haven't jumped on board yet, you're missing out. While the beginning episodes repelled watchers due to Asta constantly screaming. However, while I am team subs I can assure you the dub isn't awful, nor does Asta scream nearly as much. If you can get past the early voice acting and slow character build ups then you will be rewarded with a very action packed story. Basically once the 'Black Bulls' get their shit together the story bombards you with constant major battles and compelling action scenes. If that's not your thing don't worry as there is still scenes of character development between the rivalry of Asta and Yuno as well as Asta's relationship with Nicole

2. Banana Fish

Banana Fish follows Ash Lynx a green-eyed blonde haired gang leader. Because of his appearance hes regarded as beautiful and coveted by corrupt business owner "Papa" Dino. Dino raised Ash growing up since Ash is a runaway. Ash has began to rebel against Dino and now he wants to kill Ash. A new drug known as 'Banana Fish' was developed and the effects are mind-breaking. When ingested all control over the body is lost and the user can be trained to do different things such as murder. The story shows how a young gang leaders life is anything but easy.

1. Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai

Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai has shared the talk of the season with Goblin Slayer. As you probably have heard, the anime is fantastic. It also doesn't have much to do with bunny girls. If you've been neglecting the series because it comes across as some ecchi anime, it's not. Consider giving it a try. This school life supernatural anime comes with a psychological aspect than has shades of the Monogatari series. While I don't think everything is comparable, the feel while watching either is the same. Our protagonist, Sakuta has interactions with different girls in arc format as they deal with 'Puberty Syndrome'. This syndrome deals with the social, psychological, and physical problems adolescent youth go through in high school. The anime has a plethora of likeable characters, engaging characters, and a compelling story.

Honourable Mentions

Best girl: Juliet Persia and Hasuki Komai (Kishuku Gakkou no Juliet)

  • How can you not love these two? I couldn't decide between the two as I fell in love with both. Hasuki the loyal friend to the end. Admittedly, she took some convincing, but she came around. Similarly, Persia, loyal and willing to do anything to protect her relationship with Romio. Possessing all the wifu characteristics, Mai Sakurajima just happened to do it better.

Top 3 Anime: Fairy Tail: Final Series

  • Alright I'll admit, I didn't watch all of the original Fairy Tail. In fact, I only watched around the first 100 episodes of the series. However, as long as you know who the main characters are and a bit of their backstories (Which you can find out in the first 100 episodes) then you will be good for this final season. Currently 12 episodes in at the end of the season, Fairy Tail: Final Series was very close to making my top three. While the series has gotten more and more lewd throughout the years, the plot is what has kept me interested. Highly recommend to any Fairy Tail fans that are looking to get back into the series.

Most Disappointing: Ore ga Suki nano wa Imouto Dakedo Imouto ja Nai (My Sister, My Writer)

  • Little sister, or 'imouto' anime has become an interesting genre over the past few years. However it's in a declining state proven by My sister, My Writer. With the likes of Oriemo and Eromanga Sensei, My Sister, My Writer does not measure up. While I'll admit Oriemo was a guilty pleasure of mine, Eromanga Sensei was a different story. Both have immense amount of popularity that this season's imouto anime didn't have.
